As we countdown to Christmas, many of us are caught up in the shopping, baking, parties and gift giving, but the holidays are also the perfect time to give back to the community and we are grateful for your generous support at the Kelowna Women’s Shelter.
The shelter is a special and important place for women and children in need.
We’ve done our best to reconfigure the house to accommodate the residents, staff and clients but we’re usually full, it’s crowded, and there is a lot going on. The staff and volunteers often witness things many of us can’t imagine as part of everyday life.
Counsellors helping women who need everyday essentials like shampoo, a coat and brush because they arrived in the middle of the night with nothing but the clothes on their backs.
Women crying as they knock on the counsellors’ door looking for support.
Children describing the abuse they witnessed at home.
But with all of those tough moments, we get to witness some incredible ones too.
Women finding new inner strength and new beginnings.
Children making new friends and building healthy relationships.
Community members stepping up in countless ways to offer time, money and donations.
One of our favourite events each year is the annual Christmas party for women and children who have used the shelter and our services. It is a chaotic and joyful event filled with fun, laughter, face-painting, cookie-decorating, craft-making, hundreds of gifts and a visit from Santa Claus. During that event, we see happy moms and kids celebrating the holidays together with so much love. For us, it’s a chance to see firsthand the positive impact of your generous support.
We rely heavily on the community for monetary gifts so we can run the shelter and provide the care that is so greatly needed by these women and kids.
As you go about the hustle and the bustle of the holidays, please think of them and the many Okanagan women who could use your support. A small gift from you goes a long way to making a difference in a woman’s life.
