Childcare program supports women fleeing violence

At Kelowna Women’s Shelter, we love children. Being able to provide a safe, welcoming place for children whose moms have come to the Shelter seeking refuge from intimate partner violence is a privilege our whole team is grateful for.

But if you want to know how much we really care about kids, you just have to spend a couple of minutes with Rose Leering (pictured right) and Julie Dyson, our childcare staff.

When they’re not seeking out creative craft and activity ideas, managing toy donations, or cleaning our well-stocked playroom, these two dedicated women are cuddling babies, entertaining active toddlers, or having intense conversations with curious grade schoolers.

All so these kids’ moms can attend our free, afternoon drop-in support group, have a few minutes to take a shower, or do research into finding safe, affordable housing for their family to move into as they seek to start new lives free of abuse.

Their dedication to their jobs, and to the children in our care, is obvious, and we are so lucky to have them on the team.
